A focus on adoption awareness

November is Adoption Awareness month and nonprofit organizations like The Forgotten Initiative and CASA, court appointed special advocates, are trying to emphasize just how important adoption is for foster children. "I don't think the public is aware of the need for it," said Program Director Ashley McDermott with Northwest Oklahoma CASA. "We've got so many kids in the foster care system now that are looking for a permanent home and I think it is important to raise the awareness that these kids do need a permanent family." One of the struggles foster families can face are a lack of resources, but the Northwest Oklahoma chapter of the Forgotten Initiative is working to ease that burden. "We collect donations all year round for foster families," said Kara Reid advocate for the Forgotten Initiative in Northwest Oklahoma and long time foster mother. "I've been collecting gift cards because I have had several requests this week for things like clothing, diapers, and coats and it's easier to hand a family a gift card to Wal-Mart so they can go get the things they need."
