Mass adoption event celebrates Topeka families

A judge’s signature on adoption papers is a simple act, but it means everything to familes who have embraced children in need as their own, area parents said at a celebratory event on Saturday morning. The Shawnee County District Court, working with adoption attorneys and familial well-being agency KVC Kansas, held a mass adoption ceremony involving the families of 22 children, an occasion timed with National Adoption Day. Following a celebratory release of baloons that quickly travelled skyward, reflecting the boundless potential of the children with the guidance of their parents, judges of the court convened hearings in which parents formally answered to their ability to provide for the children and became their legal guardians. “It’s just like having a baby,” said Theresa Thomas, of Lawrence, who adopted Elizabeth “Ellie” Thomas, 2, with Robert Rickey.
