(Photo: Special to the Register) Get the kids out of the house over winter break for some fun — and maybe to learn a thing or two. The Iowa Historical Museum is hosting winter break programs for Iowans of all ages, and admission is free. On Tuesday from 1-3 p.m., learn about Official Iowa Symbols. Kids can learn about Iowa’s state rock, the geode, as well as the state bird, the goldfinch, through art and games. They can play Artifact BINGO and explore the Hands-On History gallery of Iowa History 101. Wednesday is Iowa’s Birthday Party. From 1-4 p.m., celebrate Iowa’s 170th birthday with cupcakes and fun. Play “Pin the Wings on the Goldfinch,” among other birthday games, create an art project and play music with the Flying Pig Fiddle and Banjo Band. Kids ages 8-12 can sign up for a 45-minute lesson on butter sculpting from Sarah Pratt, the queen of butter art and the official Iowa State Fair butter sculptor.
