Kids chase, smash pumpkins at post-Halloween Mundelein pumpkin drop

Kids chase their pumpkins down the sledding hill at Keith Mione Community Park in Mundelein Sunday afternoon. Four-year-old Charlie Boeche raised the baseball bat over his head and swung downward, trying his hardest to smash the pumpkin at his feet. The remains of pumpkins were scattered across the base of the sledding hill at Keith Mione Community Park in Mundelein as kids took turns pulverizing their jack-o'-lanterns while a team of Mundelein High School students and their three teachers loaded pumpkins into a catapult and launched them down the hill. A team of Mundelein High School physics teachers and students built the trebuchet seven years ago after being approached by the Mundelein Park District, teacher Mike Hickey said. Each year, the catapult — a bright red device that uses more than 400 pounds in weights to swing a 14-foot arm upward, launching the pumpkin into the air — has to be put back together at the top...
