Memphis firefighters surprise kids with donated toys

Buy Photo Neat piles of toys and other kid-friendly items lay around the Memphis fire station early Sunday — before one by one, they were loaded into giant Santa stockings and delivered to local families. As part of the annual Fill the Fire Truck drive, the city’s fire department collected toys and donations, and Fire Chief Justen Diaz said they worked with Memphis schools to help find families with children to receive them. He compared it to Toys for Tots but added “those toys go who knows where ” and that the Fill the Fire Truck effort keeps the good cheer local. “It’s a pretty good feeling,” Diaz said of the kids’ usual reaction to receiving gifts. “That’s why we do it just to help out the families in the area. That’s what this time of the year’s about.” Kids in four different families got a surprise Sunday afternoon as an ambulance and fire truck pulled up to their homes.
