Bizmen plan grocery coupons for workers

NOIDA: This is a winter of discontent for four lakh minimum wage earners in the twin cities who, on pay day, are left with neither cash payments nor bank accounts in their names. It will be a long wait for them before they get their November salaries in hand. However, on Wednesday the city's factory owners along with the district's labour department officials put their heads together to ease the workers' lot by offering them alternative resources like grocery coupons. The purpose of the coupons is to tide the workers over the next two weeks or more, until bank accounts are created for the entire workforce. According to the labour department of Gautam Budh Nagar, over 4 lakh labourers engaged in Noida and Greater Noida's factories, including 1 lakh construction workers in Noida and Greater Noida, earn government-stipulated minimum wages of Rs 7,200 per month.
